Indian Stock Market Closes Day with Slight Gains
On Thursday, April 2, 2026, the Indian stock markets closed with marginal gains. After volatile trading, Nifty closed above the 22,700 level. BSE Sensex closed with a gain of 185.23 points, or 0.25%, at 73,319.55. Meanwhile, Nifty closed up by 33.70 points, or 0.15%, reaching 22,713.10.
The market saw broad-based gains, with a total of 2,548 shares advancing, 1,505 shares declining, and 147 shares remaining unchanged.
Weakness in Midcap and Smallcap Stocks, Strength in Some Sectors. On Thursday, pressure was observed in midcap and smallcap stocks. Nifty Midcap closed down 0.3% and Nifty Smallcap down 0.4%. Regarding sectoral performance, the IT sector led the way, witnessing a 2.6% gain. The Realty index registered a 1% gain.
Meanwhile, the Auto, PSU Bank, Oil & Gas, Pharma, and Consumer Durables sectors saw a decline of approximately 1% each.
Sensex and Nifty Recover After Intraday Decline
In early trading, BSE’s 30-share Sensex fell by 1,588.51 points, reaching an intraday low of 71,545.81.
However, the market later showed a strong recovery, and Sensex recouped all losses to end the day with gains. Similarly, NSE’s 50-share Nifty also fell by 496.85 points, or 2.19%, to a low of 22,182.55 in early trading, but later witnessed a sharp recovery.
