Stock Market Today: On Thursday, April 9, the Indian stock market showed weakness on the fourth trading day of the week. Both BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty 50 opened with a decline.
The 30-share Sensex opened with a fall of 243.57 points, or 0.31%, at 77,319.33. Meanwhile, the Nifty 50 also started trading at 23,909.05, slipping by 88.30 points or 0.37%.
By around 9:20 AM, the market decline intensified. The Sensex fell by almost 300 points to 77,261, while the Nifty 50 also slipped by 113 points to trade at 23,883.
Top Gainers and Losers
On the BSE, NTPC, Tata Steel, PowerGrid, ITC, and Bharti Airtel were the top gainers. Meanwhile, shares of Sun Pharma, Indigo, Adani Port, Eternal, and L&T saw a decline.
How was the market the previous day?
Earlier, on Wednesday, April 8, the market had seen a strong rally. The Sensex closed up by 2,946.32 points (3.95%) at 77,562.90, while the Nifty 50 also closed at 23,997.35 with a gain of 873.70 points (3.78%).
Among BSE stocks, Indigo, L&T, Bajaj Finance, Mahindra & Mahindra, and Axis Bank were the top gainers. Meanwhile, shares of Tech Mahindra, Sun Pharma, and PowerGrid saw a decline.
Various Nifty sectors also showed strength. Nifty 100, Nifty Auto, Nifty Smallcap 100, Nifty FMCG, Nifty Bank, Nifty IT, and Nifty Midcap 100 all closed with gains. On Wednesday, out of 30 BSE shares, 27 closed in the green, while only 3 shares recorded a decline.
