The election campaign for the assembly elections to be held in Assam, Kerala, and Puducherry on April 9 will continue until this evening. Voting will take place in a single phase on Thursday for 126 seats in Assam, 140 in Kerala, and 30 in Puducherry. In Kerala, a total of 2.71 crore voters are eligible to cast their votes, including 1.32 crore males, 1.39 crore females, and 273 third-gender individuals, along with over 2.42 lakh overseas voters who will also be able to exercise their franchise. A total of 890 candidates are in the fray for 140 seats in Kerala, whose fate will be decided by the results of this election.
Intense Election Campaign in Kerala
Prime Minister Narendra Modi held several rallies and roadshows in Kerala in support of NDA candidates. In the state, the Congress-led UDF and CPI(M)-led LDF have long maintained political dominance. Ahead of this crucial election, top BJP leader Amit Shah and Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra campaigned on Monday. Meanwhile, the ruling LDF’s campaign was spearheaded by Chief Minister and senior CPI(M) leader Pinarayi Vijayan.
Nomination Scrutiny in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu
Today, the nomination papers filed for the single-phase voting in Tamil Nadu and the first phase of voting in West Bengal will be scrutinized. The nomination process in both states was completed yesterday, and candidates can withdraw their names until Thursday.
Voting for 234 assembly seats in Tamil Nadu and 152 seats in the first phase of West Bengal will be held on April 23. Voting for 142 seats in the second phase of West Bengal will be conducted on April 29. Counting of votes for all four states and union territories will take place on May 4.
