The Pakistan Super League 2026 has started from March 26, and this time a unique rule has been implemented in the tournament, which is related to the toss and playing XI.
Usually, according to cricket rules, captains of both teams submit their respective playing XIs to the match referee before the toss, and no changes can be made after the toss. However, this season, PSL has changed this process. Now, captains will have to provide not one, but two separate lists of playing XIs before the toss. After the toss result, the captain can choose one of these combinations.
This new rule can give teams a strategic advantage. Captains will be able to choose a better team combination keeping in mind important factors like pitch conditions and dew. In T20 cricket, the effect of dew is quite significant, especially on the team bowling in the second innings. Thus, the option to choose the playing XI after the toss will give captains more flexibility.
This PSL rule is currently much discussed and is being seen as a different experiment from traditional cricket rules.
Pakistan Super League has also included this new rule in its official rule book. Under Clause 1.2.1 of the ‘Nomination and Replacement of Players’ section, every captain can now submit two different playing XIs to the match referee before the toss. Both team sheets must contain 11 players each and a maximum of 4 substitute players. After the toss, the captain will finalize one of the two teams provided by them, sign it, and submit it to the referee. Once the final playing XI is decided, no changes can be made to it.
Meanwhile, the Pakistan Super League 2026 season has begun on March 26. The first match of the tournament was played at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, where Lahore Qalandars defeated Hyderabad Kingsmen by 69 runs.
Under the captaincy of Shaheen Shah Afridi, Lahore batted first and scored 199 runs for the loss of 6 wickets in 20 overs. In response, the Hyderabad team could only score 130 runs in 20 overs. Team captain Marnus Labuschagne scored the highest 26 runs, but could not save the team from defeat.
