Maiduguri: Nigeria’s Borno state was rocked by powerful blasts in several places on Monday night. These explosions, which occurred in at least three different locations, claimed the lives of many people, while more than 200 people were injured.
According to emergency services, initial investigations suggest the involvement of suicide bombers in this attack. The sounds of the blasts in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno, were heard far and wide.
It is noteworthy that this area has long been known for the activities of terrorist organizations like Boko Haram, which constantly poses a security challenge here.
No one claimed responsibility
According to Sirajo Abdullahi, Head of Operations for the National Emergency Management Agency, the blasts occurred at the gate of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital and two local markets – ‘Post Office’ and ‘Monday Market’. He stated that many people were injured and are receiving treatment in the hospital, but it is difficult to give an accurate figure of casualties until full information is available. So far, no organization has claimed responsibility for these attacks.
Injured taken to hospital
Eyewitness Baguni Alkali said that the injured were immediately taken to the hospital, where more than 200 people are undergoing treatment. He said that the explosions were so severe that many people died on the spot, which is extremely tragic.
Meanwhile, Mohammed Hassan, associated with a volunteer group, stated that at least 10 bodies were recovered from the ‘Post Office’ and ‘Monday Market’ areas.
Governor strongly condemns
Babagana Umara Zulum strongly condemned these blasts, stating that such attacks pose a serious threat to the peace and security of the region.
Earlier, the Nigerian Army had informed that an attack by suspected Islamic militants in the outskirts of Maiduguri was thwarted early Monday.
It is noteworthy that Nigeria has been grappling with a security crisis for several years. Especially due to active armed groups in the northern parts of the country, the situation remains constantly challenging.
Following the incident, security arrangements have been tightened in Maiduguri and surrounding areas, and additional forces have been deployed. Earlier, the Nigerian Army had reported thwarting an attack by suspected terrorists on the outskirts of the city. It is noteworthy that the northern region of Nigeria has remained unstable for a long time, where terrorist organizations like Boko Haram are active and security remains a major challenge due to continuous attacks.
