21-year-old youth dies due to police harassment in Jammu and Kashmir

A case of death of a Muslim youth allegedly in police custody has come to light at Nowgam police station in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir. The relatives of the deceased allege that the police had taken away the youth from the house in an alleged theft case. The Jammu and Kashmir Police on Saturday (July 9) arrested a 21-year-old youth Muslim Munir Lone for his alleged involvement in a theft case. According to the family members, a team from Nowgam police station in Srinagar came to their house in Natipora area at 9.30 am on Saturday. Muslim is being investigated in a case, they will release him soon. If I had known that he was going to be killed, I would never have allowed him to enter the house.
Shafiqa told that the same police team came home again in the afternoon. According to her, only male policemen had come and they had come in a private car. Shafiqa recalled, 'He told me that I would have to come to the police station because Muslim has lost consciousness. (Hearing this) I got scared. Shafiqa went with the police in the same car. After 15 minutes that car stopped at one place.
Shafiqa says, 'The police asked me to shift to another vehicle, which was parked on one side of the road. When I entered the car, I saw Muslim lying in the middle seat. He was not able to talk. He got me to sign some papers and gave me Rs 400.
Instead of going to the hospital or the police station, the policemen took the woman and her son back to their home.
