28 killed in Gujarat due to alleged spurious liquor

The death toll in Gujarat's Botad district, allegedly due to consumption of spurious liquor, has risen to 28. A senior police officer gave this information on Tuesday. It is worth noting that the sale of liquor is banned in the state. Gujarat Director General of Police Ashish Bhatia told reporters in Gandhinagar that the liquor was made from the highly toxic methyl alcohol (methanol). He said three FIRs have been registered against 14 people on charges of murder and other offenses and most of them have been detained. The matter came to light on Monday (July 25) morning when some people living in Rozid village of Botad and other nearby villages were admitted to government hospitals in Barwala area and Botad towns after their condition deteriorated. Bhatia said that the spurious liquor So far 28 people have died due to consumption. Of them, 22 were from different villages in Botad district, while six were from neighboring Ahmedabad district. Apart from this, more than 45 people are currently admitted in hospitals in Bhavnagar, Botad and Ahmedabad. Bhatia said, 'Forensic analysis has revealed that the victims had consumed methyl alcohol. We have registered a case against 14 people on charges of murder and other offenses and have already taken most of the accused into custody. Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) and Ahmedabad Crime Branch are also involved in the investigation. According to Gujarat DGP Ashish Bhatia, people drank the related chemical directly by mixing it in water. 600 liters of the chemical was sold for Rs 40,000. He said three FIRs have been registered in Barwala, Ranpur and Ahmedabad Rural. The police will also constitute an SIT to probe the matter.
