To please Lord Shiva, Tulsi leaves should never be offered on the Shivling on the day of Mahashivratri. Devotees should also keep in mind that on this day do not offer pasteurized or packet milk on Shivling, as far as possible, offer only cold milk to the Lord. Along with this, flowers of Champa or Kettle should not be offered even after forgetting Lord Shiva. Broken rice should never be offered to Shivling, nor should one offer torn or broken Bel leaves. Tilak should not be done on Shivling with vermilion.

How to do Abhishek on Mahashivratri
According to religious scriptures, Panchamrit should always be offered first on Shivling, a mixture of milk, Gangajal, saffron, honey and water is called Panchamrit. The Lord is pleased by offering it. On Mahashivratri, whoever worships the four Prahars, and Bholenath anoints them with water in the first Prahar, curd in the second Prahar, Ghee in the third and honey in the fourth Prahar, the Lord removes all their sufferings. On this day, devotees should also observe a fast with full devotion and spirit and after worshiping all the four Prahars, they should break the fast after taking a bath on the next day.
